Risk Management

The County Finance Director, in cooperation with the Assistant County Manager and Human Resources Director, administers the County's risk management policy and manages loss prevention activities in accordance with federal and state laws. In this capacity, the three managers analyze loss trends and provide the vision and the expertise required to reduce County losses while maximizing cost savings. As such, the three managers and their staff perform the following tasks:

• act as the liaison with the County Attorney;
• establish risk retention reserves and funding levels to meet the future needs of the County;
• provide objective risk management assessments of County services and functions;
• provide risk management assistance to the various County departments;
• receive and manage property and liability claims made against the County;
• review and recommend changes to self-funding and insurance programs; and
• serve as an advisor for the County Manager and County Commissioners on all risk management issues.

Annually, the County hires independent auditors to review our risk management policy for compliance with N.C. General Statutes and other governing legislation.
